Witch Bottles & Worn Shoes: Home protection folklore practices and the secrets within our walls
Wednesday 20 November, 7pm
Tickets £15 / £12 concessions
During the extensive construction works preparing for our reopening next year, builders discovered an old worn boot that was hidden in a walled up chimney void from when the museum was an almshouse.
The hidden boot comes from a long practice of home-protection folklore – from buried witch bottles to walled up old shoes – which will be explored in this evening lecture.
Join Dr Romany Reagan in the atmospheric restored 18th-century Geffrye Almshouse for a glass of wine and a chance to view the hidden boot and other historical items used in home protection folklore, before heading upstairs to learn more about the curious history of the secrets within our walls.
