Children and Families

Mother and daughter in craft workshop

The museum and gardens provide inspiration for budding young artists, designers and historians. Our small scale and intimate spaces create a safe and unthreatening but lively atmosphere for relaxed learning and enjoyment, and provide an opportunity for children to explore their own creativity. Our popular holiday and weekend programme includes an extensive and inspirational range of events including free activities for children and families, ranging from nursery-rhyme time sessions for the under-fives through to art, craft, cooking, baking and storytelling activities for children and young people. For information regarding all these events visit our What’s On pages.

In addition to the wide range of workshops and activities we also provide free activity back-packs for children aged 3 and over, while for older children there are quizzical quizzes, tantalising trails, a feely-box full of mystery objects and an audio-tour that takes you on a walk through time. Visit us every Saturday and Sunday between 12.30 and 4.30pm or during the school holidays.

To receive our e-newsletter with information on forthcoming events for children, families or young people please sign up here.

The Kids Zone

The Kids Zone provides an enjoyable and creative follow-up to a visit to the museum, or for some, a taster before a visit. Meet our mascot ‘Sam the Dog’, have a go at designing your own room or garden, try your luck in the ‘Topsy-turvy Timeline’ or help search for Sam who has got lost in a Victorian House

Family Learning Groups

The museum offers a range of creative and fun workshops for local family learning groups. Please visit the family learning page in the Community and Outreach section for more details.
