Victorians developed a passion for gardening and plant collecting.
Their taste for formal gardens and adapted historical styles was seen in fountains, ornamental features and scallop-edged beds.
New heating and construction methods and cheaper glass made conservatories and greenhouses both affordable and popular, providing suitable environments for raising ‘exotic’ and half-hardy annuals.
