This painting shows part of the audience at one of the daily lunchtime concerts held at the National Gallery throughout the Second World War. During the war the cultural life of the capital was severely restricted. Galleries, theatres and cinemas were closed down and the National Gallery's collection was moved to safe storage outside London. The concerts, organised by famous classical pianist Myra Hess, proved hugely popular although they were unashamedly highbrow. Hess later commented, 'everybody was very busy during the war and there was nobody to tell the people that this sort of music was over their heads. So they came and liked it.'
