Object History:
There is an unverified note on the object history file stating that there is a half length portrait of Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland by Sir Peter Lely in the collection of the Duke of Grafton. In this portrait she is also shown wearing an amber coloured dress.

Barbara Villers, Duchess of Cleveland (1641-1709) was one of Charles II's mistresses.

Content Description:
This half length portrait depicts a woman with her head turned to her left. She is shown wearing a low cut amber coloured dress with a white chemise with a frill underneath, which is visible at the neck. She wears a pearl necklace and earrings as well as a jewel on her right shoulder. The portrait is encircled by a painted imitation stone surround with acanthus carving. The name of the sitter, 'Barbara Villers, Duchess of Cleveland' is painted in gold letters in the top left hand corner of the portrait.
