Pop-Up Lounges Spring 2006

'Pop-Up Lounges', one of the Geffrye's previous workshops

On the first Saturday of every month the Geffrye offers a range of fun activities, including quizzes (all ages) and creative crafts (suitable for young people aged 5 - 16). All children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult. Places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis 30 minutes prior to the workshop.

July Workshop: Summer Lanterns

  • Saturday 5 July, 10.30am - 12.30pm, repeated at 2.00 - 4.00pm

Create a summer lantern to hang in your home or garden.

Giant Night Time Garden

  • Saturday 5 July, 10.30 - 11.45am

Use recycled materials to make a giant 3D night-time garden. For children aged 3+ and their carers.

August Workshop: Lotions and Potions

  • Saturday 2 August, 10.30am - 12.30pm, repeated at 2.00 - 4.00pm

Use plants and herbs from the gardens to make hand creams and face packs.

Hands-on Gardens

  • Saturday 2 August, 10.30 - 11.45am

A fun and interactive session exploring the Geffrye's gardens.

September Workshop: Back to School Baking

Bake biscuits and decorate a lunchbox to take them home in.

Summer Holiday Activities: Animal Homes

Face-painting fun in the Geffrye's gardens

  • 29 July - 1 August, 5 - 8 August and 11 - 15 August, 10.30am - 12.30pm, repeated at 2.00 - 4.00pm

Three exciting weeks of activities for children aged 3 - 15, exploring garden animals and the homes they live in. Hear animal stories, have your face painted, meet Zoolab and some unusual animals from around the world and observe the bees from the North London Beekeepers Association. Holiday activities are free for children and families. All children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult both in the workshops and in the museum. Birds' Nests: 10.30 - 11.45am

Make some delicious chocolate-flavoured birds' nests. For children aged 3+.

Dream Webs: 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2.00 - 4.00pm

Weave a spider web-shaped dream catcher. For children aged 5+

Amazing Animal Masks: 2.00 - 4.00pm


Foxy faces in summer holiday workshop

Foxy faces in the gardens last summer

Turn yourself into a fox, cat or squirrel using fake fur, fun foam and other materials. For children aged 5 - 9.

Crazy Clay Birds' Nests: 2.00 - 4.00pm

Sculpt clay into a bird's nest and make a crazy bird to live in it. For children aged 10+

'Hands-on Habitats' with Zoo Labs: 2.00 - 3.00pm and 3.30 - 4.30pm

Find out how animals have adapted to living in different habitats and handle unusual animals and insects. For all ages.

Salt Dough Animals: 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2.00 - 4.00pm

Mix up some salt dough and create a garden animal. For children aged 5+

Summer Web: 2.00 - 4.00pm

Use natural materials to make a summer spider's web. For children aged 10+

Make a rabbit, fox or badger puppet pop out of its burrow. For children aged 5+

Animal Home Diorama: 2.00 - 4.00pm

Create a mini animal habitat for your bedroom. For children aged 5 - 9.

Beetle and Butterfly Books: 2.00 - 4.00pm

Learn how to make a book in the shape of a butterfly or beetle. For children aged 10+

Week Two: Discover Hackney Stories Week Tuesday 5 - Friday 8 August


Every day this week

Nursery Rhyme Time: 10.30 - 11.45am

Explore incy insects and their outdoor homes in these interactive craft and storytelling sessions. Each day will feature a different creepy crawly! For children aged 3+

Tours of the museum and gardens: 12.45 - 1.30pm and 2.15 - 3.00pm

Join the museum's young volunteers on any day this week for a tour of the museum's period rooms and gardens. For all ages.


Tuesday 5 August

Recycled Pets: 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2.00 - 4.00pm

Use recycled materials to make a garden animal. For children aged 5+

Bug Bites: 2.00 - 4.00pm

Bake some small bug-shaped sweet and spicy biscuit bites. For children aged 5 - 9

Secret Garden: 2.00 - 4.00pm

Create your own tiny garden with a secret keyhole to look through. For children aged 10+


Wednesday 6 August

Ladybird Log Pile: 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2.00 - 4.00pm

Make your own mini habitat for some special magnetic ladybirds. For children aged 5+

Creepy Crawly Fridge Magnets: 2.00 - 4.00pm

Use fimo to create some animal-shaped magnets. For children aged 10+

Thursday 7 August

Botanical Bunting: 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2.00 - 4.00pm

Design and make some summer bunting inspired by gardens and animals. For children aged 5+

Hedgehog Homes: 2.00 - 4.00pm

Be inspired by the Geffrye's gardens to to create an artwork for your bedroom. For children aged 10+


Friday 8 August

Cool Critters: 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2.00 - 4.00pm

Make a colourful, creative animal mask using fun foam. For children aged 5+

Creepy Crawly Soaps: 2.00 - 4.00pm

Create a slippery soap and hide a scary plastic insect inside. For children aged 10+

Animal Stories: 3.00 - 3.45pm and 4.15 - 5.00pm

Hear enchanting stories about animals and the homes they live in. For children aged 5 - 11.

Tuesday 12 August

Spirally Snails: 10.30 - 11.45am

Use recycled materials to turn yourself into a snail for the day. For children aged 3+

Insect Island: 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2.00 - 4.00pm

Be inspired by the museum's gardens and create a fantasy bug island. For children aged 5 - 15

Garden Mosaic: 2.00 - 4.00pm

Help create a mosaic inspired by plants, flowers and insects. For all ages.

Bee Hive Observations: 10.30am, 11.15am, 12noon, 1.15, 2.00 and 2.45pm

Decorate a mini watering can with animal and garden patterns. For children aged 5 - 15.

Garden Mosaic: 2.00 - 4.00pm

Help create a mosaic inspired by bugs and blooms from the Geffrye's gardens. For all ages.

Bee Hive Observations: 10.30am, 11.15am, 12noon, 1.15, 2.00 and 2.45pm

Thursday 14 August

Paint each other's faces in this fun-filled session: which insect will you become? For children aged 3+

Rangoli Flower Pictures: 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2.00 - 4.00pm

Help create a giant garden pattern using rice. For children aged 5 - 15.

More Garden Mosaics: 2.00 - 4.00pm

A final chance to make your mark on this garden-inspired mosaic. For all ages.

Animal Home Face Painting: 12noon - 2.00pm

Drop in and have your face painted like a garden animal. For all ages.
