Four Centuries in one week: February half-term holiday free activities

Tuesday 16 - Friday 19 February, 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2 - 4pm

Explore homes from a different century every day from the Tudors and Stuarts, Georgians, Victorians and finally the 20th century. Make candlesticks from clay, crafty clocks and more! 

All activities are free and are for individual children and families and are suitable for children aged 5-16 years old. All workshops are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis 30 minutes before the workshop begins. All children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult.

Tuesday 16 February

Crafty Candlesticks - for ages 5+

10.30am - 12.30pm and 2 - 4pm (24 places available)

Craft a candlestick from clay and then roll a beautiful beeswax candle to put in it.

Brilliant Bags - for ages 8+

2 - 4pm (24 places available)

Decorate a canvas bag with 17th century-inspired designs using different sewing stitches.

Animate it! - for ages 5 - 8 years

2 - 4pm (14 places available)

Learn about life at home for children in the 17th century and then create an amazing animation.

Tudor Town - for all ages

Drop in anytime between 2pm and 4pm (20 places available)

Construct a crazy concertina Tudor townscape using card and other materials.


Wednesday 17 February

Fantastic Fun Portraits - for ages 5+

10.30am - 12.30pm and 2 - 4pm (24 places available)

Create an historical portrait using a variety of materials and your face as the subject!

Painted Porcelain - for ages 8+

2 - 4pm (24 places available)

Paint a stylish plate using patterns from 18th-Century porcelain.

Treasured Teas - for ages 11+

2 - 4pm (14 places available)

Decorate a wooden box using Victorian craft techniques and then blend your own tea to put inside.

Gorgeous Georgians - for all ages

Drop in anytime between 2pm and 4pm (20 places available)

Craft a brilliant badge using recycled fabrics inspired by Georgian fashions.


Thursday 18 February

Very Victorian Cabinets - for ages 5+

10.30am - 12.30pm and 2 - 4pm (24 places available)

Create your own mini Victorian-inspired cabinet complete with magical shrinking objects.

Tales from the Past - for ages 5 - 8 years

2 - 4pm (14 places available)

Step into the shoes of former school boy resident Ernest Baker and create an animation of his adventures.

Marvellous Mantle Clocks - for ages 8+

2 - 4pm (24 places available)

Make a real working clock inspired by our 19th-century drawing room.

Origami Pet Puppets - for all ages

Drop in anytime between 2pm and 4pm (20 places available)

Learn how to fold an array of amazing animal-inspired puppets. 


Friday 19 February

Design-a-T-shirt - for ages 5+

10.30am - 12.30pm and 2 - 4pm (24 places available)

Be inspired by objects and patterns from our 20th-century period rooms and create a cool t-shirt.

Fabulous Flying Ducks - for ages 8+

2 - 4pm (24 places available)

Craft flying duck wall ornaments from clay to hang at home.

Foods on the Ration - for ages 11+

2 - 4pm (14 places available)

Use historic recipes from WWII to bake your own yummy biscuits. 

(Please note that owing to the high demand for places in our cooking workshops we advise that people join the queue early to avoid disappointment)

Funky Fridge Magnets - for all ages

Drop in anytime between 2pm and 4pm (20 places available)

Create a set of 20th-century inspired marvellous magnets.


Spring Has Sprung: Easter Holiday free activities

Tuesday 5 April - Friday 8 April, 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2 - 4pm

Celebrate the new season. Decorate plant pots, make scented herb bags and create garden animals from clay.


Many Hands: May half-term holiday free activities

Tuesday 31 May - Friday 3 June, 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2 - 4pm

Inspired by the jobs done by families and servants in the home through the centuries, make natural cleaning products, bake seasonal biscuits and plant seeds.

Get in the mood for spring! Bake herbal biscuits, create seasonal headwear and take part in a treasure hunt around the gardens. 

All activities are free and are for individual children and families and are suitable for children aged 5 -16 years old. All workshops are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis 30 minutes before the workshop begins. All children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult.
