Histories of Home SSN Fourth Annual Conference
What’s cooking? Food and eating at home
- Friday 9 March, 9.30am - 5pm at the Brunei Gallery, SOAS, London. Delegate fees: £40/£25 (full-time students) – includes a light sandwich lunch and refreshments.
This conference will focus on food within the domestic setting in the UK. Papers will explore the changing feelings and meanings attached to kitchens; gender and identity issues around cooking, feeding and kitchens; the transmission of culinary knowledge as well as the impact of design and new technologies on the use of virtual and real foodspaces. There will also be a presentation on interpreting food preparation spaces and food consumption within a historic house setting. The conference programme reflects the interdisciplinary approach of the Histories of Home SSN and will draw on social geography, food history, sociology, social gerontology, design, digital and social anthropology as well as artistic and museum practice. The Conference is organised in association with the Wellcome Library.

The History of Your Home
- Saturday 12 May, 10.00am - 4.15pm. Tickets £10.00 (£8.00 for concessions), but places must be booked in advance.
Are you curious about who lived in your home in the past? How do traces of former residents shape how we feel about our home? This workshop offers practical guidance and insights about researching the history of your home.

Explore how cultures from around the world have influenced the English home from food and drink to furniture and ornaments. An event to celebrate Adult Learner's Week.

- Saturday 19 May, 10.00am - 4.30pm. Tickets £40.00 (£30.00 for concessions).
A day comprising a series of thought-provoking talks and case studies presented by historians, specialists and curators, in which themes and particular works in the exhibition will be explored in depth.
Exhibition Talk

- Sunday 20 May, 2.00pm and repeated at 3.30pm. Free.
An informal opportunity to explore objects and ideas in the exhibition, with a Geffrye curator.
