Over 55s writer's group

Come and unleash your creativity in an eight-week series of creative writing workshops at the Geffrye Museum, with local resident and award-winning writer Donna Daley-Clarke. This club is for any local resident over the age of 55 who’s interested in writing – both beginners and budding authors. Use the Geffrye’s historic almshouse to trigger your thoughts and memories and inspire your writings.

The sessions are free, but places are limited and must be booked in advance. Tea, coffee and materials are provided.

Language of Flowers Open Evening: Event in British Sign Language

  • Tuesday 9 February, 6.00 - 8.00pm. Free, no need to book in advance. Talk will take place at 6.15pm and craft workshop at 7.15pm.


A special free evening at the Geffrye Museum. Learn about the language of flowers with John Wilson, enjoy a glass of wine and some refreshments and then create some Valentine's Day cards with deaf artist Sheng Kai Chou. Celebrating Love Week in partnership with Birkbeck College.


Open Evening: I Love the Home

An evening to warm the heart even if it's cold outside. Enjoy a talk about the history of the love letter by historian Leonie Hannan, listen to love songs from The Toots or make a 'home sweet home' badge and decorate a cup cake with hearts and flowers. Celebrating Love Week in partnership with Birkbeck College.

This one-day conference organised by the Histories of Home SSN is an exciting opportunity to explore imaginative interpretation methods and ways of engaging a cross-section of audiences with the theme of ‘home’. Whether you work with object-based collections, archival material or within historic interiors, the day will provide a wealth of ideas and examples on how to inspire and engage your visitors.

Workshop: My East End Home

How have our homes changed over time? Do you have pictures showing how the inside of your home used to look, or perhaps old kitchen utensils, ornaments or other household items? Join historian Leonie Hannan to explore how your home, and homes in the East End, have changed over time.

Amanda will read from her new, highly-acclaimed book, Behind Closed Doors: At Home in Georgian England. The reading will be followed by questions and answers.


Short course: House and Home in Victorian London

  • Thursday 22 April - Thursday 1 July, 3.00 - 5.00pm, 11 meetings.


This module explores how the material world of the home shaped family life in Victorian London by considering class and gender identities and domestic roles and rituals. We will look at family relationships across society: in the 'slums' and lodging houses, middle-class suburban villas and aristocratic townhouses. Led by historian Leonie Hannan.

  • Saturday 12 June, 10.00am - 4.30pm. Tickets £35 in advance (includes morning coffee and a light lunch).


A day of lectures and case studies, presented by curators, historians and specialists, exploring themes and particular objects in the exhibition.
