Visiting and Booking

The Geffrye is located in Shoreditch just minutes from the City of London. It is easily reached by public transport.

Admission to the museum's eleven period rooms and herb and period gardens is free. 

Visitors may take photographs without a tripod for personal use. Commercial photography must be approved in advance.

Opening Hours

Museum:

The museums's eleven period rooms and special exhibitions are open at the following times:

  • Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 5pm
  • Sundays & Bank Holiday Mondays 12 - 5pm
  • The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 June, 12noon - 5.00pm
  • Closed Mondays (unless Bank Holiday), Good Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day
  • The restaurant is open until 4.45pm
  • The shop is open during museum hours

 

Restored Historic Almshouse:

The restored historic almshouse has been fully restored to its original condition, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of London's poor and elderly in former times. Tours are conducted by museum volunteers and take place at specific times each month. It is located in the south wing of the museum buildings and has its own entrance. If you are planning to visit as part of a group please see the information below.

Visitors will have a chance to visit the restored historic almshouse on the following days:

  • Saturdays: 2 June*, 7 July, 4 August and 1 and 22 September** 2012
  • Wednesdays: 6* and 20 June, 4 and 18 July, 1 and 15 August and 5 and 19 September 2012 (see Wednesday details below)
  • Tuesdays: 22 May 2012
  • Sundays: 10 June and 9 September 2012

 

Timed entries are at 11.00am, 12.00pm, 2.00pm and 3.00pm with additional 4.00pm visits from April - October.

Tickets: Adults £2.50, Friends of the Geffrye, disabled visitors (and their companion) and children under 16 free. Numbers are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that only groups of 8 or more can book in advance.

* Chelsea Fringe Festival: Saturday 2 June and Wednesday 6 June 2012
As part of the Chelsea Fringe Festival we will be have Historic Garden and Almshouse Tours.
11.00am, 12noon, and 2.00, 3.00 and 4.00pm.
Places are free but will be allocated on the day on a first-come, first-served basis.

** Open House London: Saturday 22 September 2012
As part of Open House London we are opening the almshouse to the public for free.
10.15 - 12.15pm and 2.00 - 4.15pm, please note last entry at 4.00pm.
Places are free but will be allocated on the day on a first-come, first-served basis.


Group visits to the almshouse

The 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month we welcome advance booking by groups of 8 or more, therefore not all of these tours may be open to the public. There are 16 places for this tour and these will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis 10 minutes before the tour begins. We suggest those wishing to visit the restored historic almshouse on a Wednesday contact the Information and Bookings Officer on 020 7739 9893 to check availability.
