During the Edwardian period, the garden became increasingly informal in style, mainly as a reaction against the rigidity of the Victorian bedding system.
Gardens with herbaceous borders and ‘old-fashioned’ flowers became popular, inspired by the profusion and ‘casual’ appearance of cottage gardens and an interest in medieval plants.
