London 2012 Free Schools' Special Week 3 - 6 July
Cross curricular KS1 and 2
To celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and to coincide with the Geffrye's own cultural celebrations culminating in the 'Stories of the World' exhibition, At Home with the World, we are pleased to offer a FREE cross-curricular, multi-sensory schools' special week. Children will be encouraged to explore the wonderfully varied cultural influences on everyday objects in the home. This session is free of charge to 8 classes - book now to guarantee your class a place!
Pupils will work with museum staff and artists to:
- Visit the Geffrye exhibition, At Home with the World
- Handle original artefacts which have in some way been influenced or inspired by another culture
- Design and print Turkish-style patterns
- Play outdoor games in the front gardens (weather permitting)
Session times:
10.00am - 2.30pm daily.
Two exciting primary sessions are also available to book this Summer Term. Session charges will apply to the following:
The Plant Hunters
KS1 and 2

A great chance to discover plants from around the world which have been used in the home since Tudor times. Children will discover the Plant Hunters’ secret world and re-enact their quest to find new plants from across the globe.
This session supports learning and thinking and QCA Unit 24, ‘Passport to the World’; QCA Unit 2b ‘Mother Nature; designer’ and Unit 1b ‘Growing Plants’.
During this session pupils will:
- Discover links to other countries through plants that have come from overseas and then been brought back to the Geffrye gardens
- Find out about the plant hunters and discover their passion for plants
- Explore the Geffrye gardens and learn about different plants
- Draw and record their findings in the style of the plant hunters in a botanical log book

Stories of the World
Cross curricular KS1 and 2

As we prepare for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Geffrye Museum celebrates this amazing sporting and cultural event with its ‘Stories of the World’ Exhibition, At Home with the World, which asks how ‘English’ are our homes? Many of the familiar objects in our homes today have either come from distant lands or been influenced by other cultures.
This primary session supports learning and thinking and QCA Geography Unit 24, ‘Passport to the World’ and QCA Unit 22, ‘A contrasting locality overseas’
During this session pupils will:
- Visit the Geffrye exhibition, At Home with the World, and experience the collection of Geffrye furniture and everyday household objects
- Consider the influence of different cultures on objects in their own home
- Design and decorate a ceramic 'tea bowl'
