Pupils will investigate a selection of our Twentieth Century period rooms. In each room the themes of technology, materials, textiles, lighting and design style will be discussed. The Geffrye’s handling collection of authentic domestic artefacts provides an opportunity to study design close-up and students may focus on the objects and textiles in terms of context, form and function and method of manufacture.

Pupils will work individually, in small groups, investigate and draw objects and discuss their findings.

Optional creative activity:

Pupils may print and dye a swatch of fabric using a variety of techniques, inspired by motifs from the collection.

Curriculum links:

Design and Technology KS 3: Exploring and understanding resistant materials, and textiles - and using a collection to inform pupils’ own designs.

Session information:

Sessions run for two hours; the extended activity can be incorporated or extra time added by request. Suitable for a maximum of 30 students. Worksheets will be provided.
