A History of the Geffrye Almshouses looks beyond the architecture of the building, erected in 1714 with money bequeathed to the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers by Sir Robert Geffrye, and examines the lives of elderly poor who lived here during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This generously illustrated account is enriched with anecdotes and excerpts from surviving records, providing a fascinating insight into the social context and domestic arrangements of the Geffrye pensioners.
