A drawing room in 1890 - photography Chris Ridley
From the 1870s a reaction against mainstream taste occurred, which came to be known as the Aesthetic Movement. People who adopted this style cultivated ‘artistic’ taste and a marked sensitivity to beauty in art and design.
In this room, although the colours and patterns are rich and vibrant, they complement each other and create an overall style which advocates of the Aesthetic Movement would have considered calm and artistically satisfying.
