Abstract pictures appeared in the domestic interior from the mid-century, but no particular type of art dominated. Improvements in colour printing increased the popularity of reproductions and helped open up a market for posters. Pictures were often hung in a single line at eye-level, in narrow metal frames, like those shown here.
