20th Century Living RoomsPage 1

Light, sunny and less densely furnished living rooms became the ideal in the first part of the century, especially in the suburbs, where newly built homes had electric lighting and were designed to be easier to keep clean and hygienic. The influence of the Arts and Crafts Movement was seen in furniture and textiles inspired by traditional English country forms. At the same time there was a fashion for eighteenth-century furniture which led to the manufacture of reproductions and furniture loosely based on the earlier styles.
