They were brick-built and often the doors and windows were given emphasis with a stucco surround, a cement rendering which was usually painted white. The roofs were mainly of slate, with projecting eaves, and often the fronts were embellished with bay windows. The main living rooms were all on the ground floor, with bedrooms above. Most of these houses had gardens at the front and back.
