19th Century PicturesPage 1
Paintings were generally hung in heavily decorated and gilded frames. Landscapes were popular, while narrative pictures, depicting a story or conveying a lesson on morality, were in vogue by the middle of the century. Prints were much more affordable than paintings, and their quality was such that they were widely collected to adorn the rooms of the middle classes. Paintings and prints were hung from a metal rod below the cornice or from nails in the wall.
