Parlour walls were generally panelled from floor to ceiling in pine, painted in a colour referred to as stone but which ranged from buff to earthy browns or greens. Doors and skirtings were sometimes painted dark brown so as not to show marks and scuffs. Early in the century the panelling featured prominent mouldings, but the trend was towards flatter walls as the century progressed.
