From the 1660s curtains were generally hung in pairs, pulled back to each side of a sash window. Sometimes a pelmet, known as a valance, was fixed above the curtains to hide the rod and provide a frame to the window. This was usually covered in the same material as the curtain, typically a woollen cloth dyed in a plain green or red.
