18th Century HeatingPage 1

Fireplaces were fitted with stone or marble surrounds, or painted wood. In the early eighteenth century, people would have placed an iron basket grate on the floor of the hearth in which to make a coal fire. Later the grate was commonly built into the hearth, either with brick-built sides, known as 'hobs', or, from around 1760, with a cast-iron fitted hob grate.
