In 1666 the Great Fire of London destroyed most of the houses in the centre of the City. New houses had to be built of brick and conform to regulations over their size and construction. They were often built in terraces along the streets, with the ground floor used for commercial purposes. The main living room, known as the parlour or dining room, was on the first floor at the front, while the chambers were on the floors above.
