Pictures are frequently mentioned in inventories of households of the middling sort in the seventeenth century, but it is not easy to infer from these sources exactly what type they were. Portraits were probably rare at this level of society, since few have survived to this day. Landscapes and topographical views were perhaps more common and people appear to have owned maps and prints.
