17th Century HeatingPage 2

Early seventeenth century fireplaces were often the dominant feature of the room, with a decorative overmantel reaching to the ceiling. This would normally be in oak but plasterwork or stone were alternatives for the wealthy. The brickwork of the chimney was protected with a cast-iron fire-back, which also reflected some of the heat back into the room.
