The Geffrye Museum is an independent charitable trust, grant-aided by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The Trust actively seeks to attract donations and corporate sponsorship to support the museum's services and development plans.

In recent years we have been fortunate to receive support from MLA/Renaissance London, V&A/MLA Purchase Fund, the Art Fund, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the DCMS/Wolfson Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund. The Friends of the Geffrye Museum, corporate sponsors, charitable trusts and individuals have also generously supported the museum through donations.

Exciting News

Masterplan by David Chipperfield Architects, 2010 showing new-build elements in green

The Geffrye Museum is embarking on an exciting deveopment under its new name of The Geffrye, Museum of the Home. Guided by a Masterplan by David Chipperfield Architects, the trustees and staff are seeking to make the museum a centre for learning and discovery about not just the physical nature of home, but also the ideas, meanings and values which are expressed through home. The development is estimated to cost £13.27m. The Heritage Lottery Fund announced its support for the project in May 2011, awarding a first-round development grant of £518,500 towards a possible full grant of £10.9m. We are now actively seeking funds from trusts, foundations and individual donors. We anticipate completion in 2015.

The achievement of our development proposals during 2014-15 will be a fitting celebration for some very important anniversaries for the museum, 400 years after Robert Geffrye's birth in 1613, 300 years are the opening of the Geffrye Almshouses in 1714 and 100 years after the opening of the Geffrye Museum in 1914.

We hope you will join us in making the Museum of the Home a reality and securing the Geffrye's future for many centuries to come. If you would like to help or want to discuss the project in more detail please contact the Director, David Dewing on 0207 739 9893 or email ddewing@geffrye-museum.org.uk

The Geffrye welcomes volunteers to work alongside us at a wide range of events and activities at the museum. We need your help:

  • at our busy summer family days and other family events
  • with basic administration for education events
  • as a guide in the restored almshouse

We offer a warm and friendly environment in which to learn new skills and offer training for all the above duties. Friends

The Friends of the Geffrye Museum exists as a separate charity to provide a support group and foster interest in the museum and its activities. A twice-yearly programme of events includes guided visits to lesser-known museums, private collections, galleries and places of historic interest, and sometimes an auction, book sale or supper party. Friends are invited to private views and receptions at the museum, and a twice-yearly Newsletter keeps them informed of developments and forthcoming exhibitions. Friends are also active within the Museum as volunteers.
If you would like to take part in this friendly and active group, please complete the form below and send it to Catherine Trillo, Membership Secretary, 45 Ellington Street, London N7 8PN (tel. 020 7607 9325).
